Problem

Nike SB sneakers have become increasingly popular since the early 2000s. Currently their hype is at an all time high with every sneaker that is released selling out instantly. In the past Pure held an in store raffle for high profile shoe releases. With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, in store raffles were no longer an option and an online platform had to be created to facilitate these releases.

Solution

Skateshops that sell Nike SB sneakers are able to distribute the sneakers either through a first come, first served basis, or through a raffle system. I worked with Pure to develop a system that will streamline both distribution methods. The end result is a web app that is separate from their main site to reduce server load on their web store. Upcoming shoe releases are shown with a countdown timer letting customers know when they will go live. With first come first serve releases, the end of the timer denotes when the shoe is available for purchases. For raffle shoes, the removal of the timer signifies when the raffle is over.

Design

The web app is kept to just the basics and the user flow is limited to select actions. The landing page of the application only shows the current raffles along with the most recent 2 closed raffles. I did extensive user testing exercises with two prototypes built in Sketch and mocked up in InVision to figure out which layouts worked the best.

User feedback was gathered to decide how to display key items such as the the countdown clock, purchase button, and even the image gallery for the shoes. Feedback was obtained through showing InVision mockups to key stakeholders, current shop customers, and a UserTesting.com sample group.

From the beginning we knew that the app would be primarily used on mobile, so it was designed as a mobile first web application. The design is responsive and will resize without needing a separate desktop version, but key design choices were made to prioritize the mobile user experience.

Development

I built the web app on HTML and CSS. The overall design is lightweight and very simplified. All of the first come first serve orders are checked out using their existing Shopify account to handle card processing. Raffle releases are handled solely on the new application. Raffle customers fill out their preferred size and contact information and are chosen at random to determine if they have won the shoe. Once the winners are chosen, payment links are sent through Shopify.
